Clinton in the Lead for Questionable Campaign Donors
Lost in the media attention to the “fundraising race" and record amounts raised by the Democratic candidates for president, is the sheer sleaziness of the big money both campaigns court. In a twist on those “The late dictator of Nigeria, General Sanni Abacha, has died and now his widow wants your help in getting his $80 million out of the country.†e-mails from Nigeria asking you to place money in a bank account, Nigeria has accused Hillary Clinton “Hillraiser†and Texas oilman, Kase Lawal, of forging papers in the name of a local Nigerian company to win offshore-drilling approvals and of illegally pumping and selling more than 10 million barrels of crude oil. according to lMcClatchy group newspapers.
“Hillraisers" pledge to raise at least $100,000 in donations. Clinton attended a fundraising luncheon that collected more than $100,000 at Lawal's home in Houston last August, McClatchy reports.
Jay Carson, a campaign spokesman, brushed off such criticism.
"While no vetting process is perfect, our vetting department does extensive vetting in order to catch any issues with donors," he said. "And to our knowledge, Mr. Lawal is an upstanding member of his community in Houston."
However, a simple Google search by McClatchy produced reports of serious allegations about some of Lawal's business dealings in Nigeria and South Africa.
Other large donors and bundlers have embarrased both the Clinton and Obama campaigs, though Clinton appears in the lead with indicted, or fleeing felons according to The Olypian.
The Nigerian legal system is notorious for corrupt and politically motivated prosecutions. But the prosecutor who brought the charges, Nuhu Ribadu, had a personal reputation for integrity. He had billions in stolen funds as head of the country's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He was removed late last year.
