Dem Presidential Candidates Answer Questions on Oregon Initiatives

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have held events and met with editorial boards around the state recently. Obama gave an interview with the Medford Mail Tribune in late March and Hillary Clinton met with the editorial board of the Register Guard as reported yesterday.

On the topic of some Oregon voter initiatives which have been challenged by the Bush Justice Department, here's a sample of their (very carefully stated) views on assisted suicide (and medical marijana from Sen. Obama).

First Obama:

Mail Tribune Q: A couple of other issues of interest to Oregonians involve initiatives passed by the voters that have come into conflict with the federal government: physician-assisted suicide and medical marijuana. Do you support those two concepts?

Obama A: I am in favor of palliative medicine in circumstances where someone is terminally ill. ... I'm mindful of the legitimate interests of states to prevent a slide from palliative treatments into euthanasia. On the other hand, I think that the people of Oregon did a service for the country in recognizing that as the population gets older we've got to think about issues of end-of-life care. ...

As for medical marijuana ... I'm not familiar with all the details of the initiative that was passed, but I think the basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors, I think that's entirely appropriate. ...

I'm not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue.

And Clinton:

Register Guard Q: What’s your attitude toward Oregon’s assisted suicide law?

Sen. Clinton A: I believe it’s within the province of the states to make that decision. I commend Oregon on this count, as well, because whether I agree with it or not or think it’s a good idea or not, the fact that Oregon is breaking new ground and providing valuable information as to what does and doesn’t work when it comes to end-of-life questions, I think, is very beneficial.

Q: Would you have voted for it if you were a resident of the state?

A: I don’t know the answer to that. I have a great deal of sympathy for people who are in difficult end-of-life situations. I’ve gone to friends who have been in great pain and suffering at the end of their lives. I’ve never been personally confronted with it but I know it’s a terribly difficult decision that should never be forced upon anyone. So with appropriate safeguards and informed decision-making, I think it’s an appropriate right to have.

The fact that Obama just

The fact that Obama just admitted how grossly unqualified he is to run this country is just a statement to how much freedom this country has. Those that are ignorant enough to vote for someone that so very clearly has no idea what is really going on should be grateful that spreading that ignorance is their right. So Obama, figure out what it takes to be a knowledgeable person before you run your mouth about Change and how you will better America. Because you so clearly don't even know what all that entails considering that you don't even know "all the facts". For those that voted for him, well you probably won't even read this because that would mean you yourselves were actually making an informed decision.

Ok, you say that Obama

Ok, you say that Obama doesn't know "all the facts" and is "running his mouth about change". Your stupid. I'm sure that you don't even know "the facts" and to me YOU are the one running your mouth about something your too ignorant to understand. He didn't admit that he was unqualified to run our country just because he said that he isn't very educated on the marijuana legalization. If you could read...you would have seen that. Do you really think that him not knowing about marijuana makes him not fit to run our country? It doesn't. He will read up on what is going on with the marijuana legalization, it's not like he is just going to sit there like president Bush did and let the world pass him by. People like you need to shut your mouth for a minute and give him a chance to change our country, he hasn't even been president for a month now and you expect everything to be fine.

Euthanasia

You know, I don't really think people study that, do you? And Obama is a good man, and is fit to run our country!

I think that euthanasai is right. I think when you are so ill, you have the right to die.

And for the record, Hammer,

And for the record, Hammer, you're right.

MARIJUANA AND ASSISTED SUICIDE.

I TRULY BELIEVE THAT MARIJUANA HAS BENEFITS AS THE AMA WAS AGAINST THE ILLEGALIZATION IN THE FIRST PLACE. THEY WERE FINALLY FINDING THE USE OF CANNIBIS IN MEDICINE. IT WAS THE
WIDELY USED MEDICINE FROM THE 1900 TILL THE CONGRESS MADE IT
ILLEGAL BASED ON A RACIALLY MOTIVATED LAW AGAINST MEXICANS AND BLACKS. IT IS OBVIOUS TO ANY HISTORY BUFF.

IT IS TIME TO REVERSE CONGRESS ON THIS ISSUE. JUST LIKE PROHIBITION, WHICH IS NOT BASED ON MEDICAL USE OF ALCOHOL
IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT IS WIDELY ABUSED AND DESTROYS THOSE WHO EVEN DON'T DRINK. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE TOBACCO SHOULD BE ILLEGAL BECAUSE IT HAS NO MEDICAL USE, WHATSOEVER.

I THINK THIS COUNTRY HAS OVER STEPPED IT OWN LAWS THAT ARE CONTINUING THE USE OF ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO. WE CURRENTLY HAVE LAWS ON THE BOOKS THAT PREVENT THE USE OF ANY SUBSTANCE
LIKE TOBACCO THAT CAUSES CANCER IN HUMANS, NOT TO MENTION ANIMALS. WE HAVE PEOPLE DYING FROM SECOND HAND SMMOKE THAT HAVE NEVER USED TOBACCO. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. STOP THE GOVERNMENT FROM IGNORING IT'S OWN LAWS.

MARIJUANA SHOULD BE LEGAL FOR MEDICINE, I HAVE A PERMIT AND THE STATE OF OREGON SHOULD GIVE PEOPLE THAT HAVE PERMITS AND USE SEIZED MARIJUANA AFTER TESTING IT FOR AGENT ORANGE,
AND OTHER CHEMICALS DESIGNED TO WIPE IT OUT, ALL OF THEM BY U.S. COMPANIES, AND LASTLY THE GOVERNMENT RACIALLY MOTAVIATED LAWS.

IT IS TIME FOR THIS TO STOP.

THANK YOU.

Euthanasia and assisted

Euthanasia and assisted suicide are to completely different things, nobody has the right to say someone elses life is meaningless, but an individual has all the right to seek help in his/her's own suicide.
