Warning: Not a safe alternative to cigarettes

Apparently not content with killing people with cigarettes, RJR has come up with a new way to deliver highly addictive, death-dealing products to the American public: Candy-like tobacco tablets.

Here are a few things that Oregonians should know:

  • There is currently no FDA approval process for these new drugs.

  • Portland is a test-market for these products, which are hitting shelves this week.
  • Because they are essentially odorless and require no spitting (like chewing tobacco), it will be very difficult to know if your kid is using them.

Though the products are just starting to hit the shelves, pre-sales marketing is in full force. I was able to stop by a local cigarette shop and pick up marketing literature for Camel Orbs and Camel Sticks, dissolvable tobacco tablets.

It's worth mentioning that the marketing material for the product prominently states "WARNING: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT A SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO CIGARETTES" on the back cover.
