Federal agency says Bush logging plan threatens Oregon salmon, spotted owl

The Bush Administration's efforts to dismantle protections for salmon and the northern spotted owl are seriously flawed, and not adequately supported by science, concludes a report by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency's department of fisheries.

Jeff Barnard of the Associated Press reports that the BLM's preferred plan -- to bring back clear-cutting and triple timber production in Oregon would dismantle wildlife habitat protections that were established in 1994, primarily to the detriment of salmon, the spotted owl, and other endangered species.
